  8. GHB, álcoolNa terminologia química, os álcoois constituem um nume­roso grupo de compostos orgânicos derivados de hidrocarbonetos que contém um ou mais grupos hidroxila (-OH). O etanol (ou álcool etílico, C2H5OH) é um dos membros dessa classe de compostos, e é o principal ingrediente psicoativo das bebidas alcoólicas. Por extensão, o termo “álcool” também é usado para referir-se a bebidas alcoólicas.O etanol resulta da fermentação de açúcar produzida por lêvedos. Em condições normais, as bebidas produzidas por fermentação têm uma concentração de álcool que não ultrapassa 14%. Na produção de álcoois por destilação, ferve-se uma mistura fermentada e o etanol que se evapora é recolhido como um condensado quase puro. Além do seu uso para consumo humano, o etanol é também usado como combustível, como solvente e na manufatura química (veja álcool impróprio para o consumo humano).O álcool absoluto (etanol anidro) é o etanol contendo não mais do que 1% de água por massa. Nas estatísticas sobre produção ou consumo de álcool, o álcool absoluto refere-se ao conteúdo de álcool (como 100% de etanol) das bebidas alcoólicas.Do ponto de vista químico, o metanol (CH3OH), também conhecido como álcool metílico e álcool de madeira (ou de amido), é o mais simples dos álcoois. É usado como um solvente industrial e também como um adulterador para desnaturar o etanol e torná-lo impróprio para o consumo (bebidas metiladas). O metanol é altamente tóxico; dependendo da quantidade consu­mida, pode produzir turvação da visão, cegueira, coma e morte.Outros álcoois impróprios para o consumo, com efeitos poten­cialmente nocivos, são consumidos ocasionalmente, como, p.ex., o isopropanol (álcool isopropílico, freqüente em desinfetantes) e etilenoglicol (usado como anticongelante em automóveis).O álcool é um sedativo/hipnótico com efeitos semelhantes aos dos barbitúricos.
